dr. JORGE JUAN VEGA Y VEGA

Linguist and associate professor of French Language, Literature and Translation at Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain), as well as a translator and conference interpreter. He holds a Ph.D. in Language Science at Université Lumière Lyon-2 (France). Besides college instruction, Professor Vega serves also as translator and conference interpreter.

Professor Vega is Lindolenex research group founder and coordinator. He collaborates with the scientific committee of Romanica Olomucensia, the editorial board of LFE Revista de Lenguas para fines específicos, and other peer-reviewed journals, such as Thélème, Revista complutense de estudios franceses, and Çédille, Revista de estudios franceses. Moreover, Professor Vega is an active member of the Graduate School at Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where he coordinates doctoral projects within two lines of research, Linguistics and Society and Sociocultural Influence of Classical Tradition.

RESEARCH

Professor Vega y Vega focuses on four main research domains:

APPLIED LINGUISTICS

He explores language acquisition of French and Spanish as foreign language, and language learning through images by implementing his « méthode intégrale ». He also develops techniques to foster understanding, critical thinking and communication for language, literature, and translation courses. These interests have led him to pay special attention to the role of natural inferences in the language learning/acquisition process and communication, which has resulted in the publication of the book titled The Essential Enthymeme. Propositions for Educating Students in a Modern World (Bern, Peter Lang, 2015), of which he is the co-author and editor. He has also published: "Quel français enseigner à l'heure de l'informatique? FRENCH AND CONTRASTIVE LINGUISTICS

He has studied in depth the history, usage and function of the French verb « être », as well as its etymology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and cognition. Further, he has explored the interlocks between the French verb "être" and the Spanish verbs "ser" and "estar," and compare it to other similar verbs from several Indoeuroepan languages. Some of the most important works on this regard are "Être, ser y estar. Lingüística y ménage à trois" (2006), "Les Natures lexicales du verbe être. Un essai de modélisation verbale" (2009), and "Critères discursifs pour la distinction espagnole Ser / Estar à partir du français Être" (2010). He has also explored its linguistic, philological, and epistemological. His exhaustive study has prompted the publication of the book titled Qu’est-ce que le verbe ‘être’ ? Éléments de morphologie, de syntaxe et de sémantique (Honoré Champion, 2011). His recent publication on this domain is titled "La vie cachée du verbe être. PRAGMATICS AND DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

His work has mainly revolved around the concept of enthymeme, the natural inference in communication (cognition, expression, emotion), and the analysis of implicit messages. He has studied the romanesque enthymeme at a linguistic, rhetorical, and literary level in novels, particularly in the works by Michel Butor, and Gabriel García Márquez. Moreover, he has studied this device in relation to the poetic eloquence and the ineffable. His thorough research has led to the publication of the books titled L’Enthymème. Histoire et actualité de l’inférence du discours (PUL, 2000) and Del Razonamiento a la Argumentación (Peter Lang, 2012), of which he is author and editor. His most recent publications are the review "Présence, dialogue et actualité de Blaise Pascal", Çédille. Revista de estudios franceses, n 13, 2017, pp. 589-591, and the article co-authored with Professor Daniela Ventura: "Le dit et le vouloir taire dans la publicité de produits dits ‘sensibles’", Dire, n 9, La stéréotypie des altérités : clichés, formules, langue de bois, lieux communs, 2017, pp. 76-90.

TRANSLATION THEORY AND PRACTICE

His work has delved in the translation of literary and humanistic texts in French, Italian, Spanish, and English. He has studied the specificities of French-Spanish translation in order to discuss problems, explore different methodologies, and suggest prospective solutions. In particular, his investigation and pedagogy aims at ensuring high-quality literary texts. This interest has encouraged him to embark on the edition and translation of the work titled Eugène Pégot-Ogier, Las Islas Afortunadas o Archipiélago de las Canarias (Ediciones del Cabildo de Gran Canaria, 2009). His most recent publication is the article co-authored with Professor Daniela Ventura, "La place de la rhétorique dans la production traduisante de la publicité", Revista TTR, Traduction, Terminologie, Rédaction, vol.
